Memphis, Tn - Word is coming by US Mail to Memphis City School teachers saying they owe big money.
Stephanie Fitzgerald, the President of the Memphis Educational Association says, “One man who called said $30,000 that’s over a ten year period.”
The problem stems from FICA deductions not being taken out of MCS checks. The employees are being asked to repay years of missed money.
Fitzgerald says, “Apparently I’m assuming this happened when these individuals were hired…and when their papers were turned in to payroll, no deductions were made for social security.” Fitzgerald just found out about the problem on Tuesday, October 3rd.
She thinks the problem stems from the MCS Human Resources Department, but does not know exactly how many teachers or employees are affected.
Fitzgerald says, “They’ve been offered a choice between either paying back the money that was supposed to go to FICA or not paying it back, but if you don’t pay it back, then you get no retirement credit with social security for those quarters.”
Fox 13 spoke with MCS to day and they say they’re aware of the problem and are consulting with their legal team.
