Rodney King Beats Cop in Boxing Match

Rodney King rose to national attention in 1991 when he suffered a beating at the hands of Los Angeles police after being pulled over. But, now it’s King who has delivered a beating of his own … to a former cop no less.

King won by unanimous decision over former Pennsylvania police officer Simon Aouad in three rounds of a celebrity boxing match, which took place at the Philadelphia Airport Ramada on Friday, according to the Boston Herald . King won $5,000.

"This is a new chapter in my life," King said, according to a statement by the promoter. "I am sober, fit and now a winner."

King was videotaped being beaten by police in 1991. The police accused of the beating were acquitted in 1992, which set off three days of riots in Los Angeles that killed 53 and wounded 2,000.

King has struggled with drugs and alcohol since the beating and was arrested several times after the infamous beating. Aouad, who goes by the fighting name "Renegade," was arrested on gun and drug charges in 2006.

On Good Day Philadelphia a day before the fight , King talked about how his family grew up watching boxing. "Boxing's one of the oldest sports around, and for me to pass up an opportunity like this to get in the ring and box...I wouldn't pass it up," he said.

The three-round boxing match was put on by Celebrity Boxing, which has promoted fights such as Jose Canseco vs. Danny Bonaduce. Bonaduce beat Canseco in the match.
