Vehicles have crashed across a slippery road of offal on a stretch of highway in New Zealand.

The massive leak from a truck left a trail of animal heads, carcasses and miscellaneous guts up to 30cm (12 inches) deep on a 15km (9 mile) highway north of Wellington, AAP and News Limited Web sites report.

Commuters who drove through the fat-covered mess were disgusted when they realized the carnage that caused cars to slip and crash on the road, which is now closed.

A spokesperson for the New Zealand Transport Association told of the smelly bloodbath and the risks offal spills posed to the public.

“It's pretty gross, especially with animal heads and carcasses among the mess."
