Cop Fired for Being Too Lenient

An Australian police sergeant was reportedly fired for giving speeding drivers smaller fines than the law required him to do, according to news.com.au .

The unnamed officer was believed to have booked about 500 people over the past two years, but reduced the fines for the violations by increasing a zone's speed limit on a ticket.

A police spokeswoman said the officer had been dismissed following an Ethical Standards Department investigation into allegations of misconduct and perverting the course of justice.

The Victoria police department said the officer was let go because he was not honest about what he was doing.

"All police officers are entitled to use discretionary powers when handling speeding offenses, whether that be through the issue of infringement notices, cautions or other form of lawful action," the spokeswoman said. "However, we expect that the exercise of this discretion must be transparent and open to scrutiny."

The officer is appealing his dismissal.

A Florida police officer was fired earlier this month for reportedly demanding an ice cream cone from a merchant and not paying for it.
