It seems just about everything is going green, including appliances. While e-efficient household appliances may seem a bit pricey, the savings in the long run make it worth every penny.
These washers and refrigerators have unique star quality to them, an Energy Star quality. Energy Star appliances are becoming the new trend for homeowners looking to save a few bucks, and help the climate.
In order for any major home appliance to get its Energy Star of approval, they must meet the appliance standards program set by the U.S. Department of Energy . That means they must use 10 to 50 percent less energy than regular appliances.
Just look for a logo that says 'energy' with the little star on it, and you know it's passed the federal government's energy star criteria.
Once an appliance passes all the necessary tests, manufacturers are required to display yellow energy cards to show you just how much it will cost you over a year's time to wash your clothes or dishes, and keep your favorite foods fresh.
If you switch to a new Energy Star refrigerator, you can save up to 200 dollars a year, so that's really a significant savings. And, the savings don't stop there.
Using an Energy Star washer can help you save an average of 50 dollars annually on your utility bill, and about 17 gallons of water with every load of laundry. Energy Star washers are also easier on the threads. They clean your clothes without the rough turning and twisting of an agitator, there's also lots of room for bulky items like winter coats and comforters. Plus, with the reduced amount of water used, it cuts back on dryer time.
If the reduced drying time and utility savings aren't enough to convince you to switch, this tidbit of information might.
Homeowners who purchase Energy Star appliances are eligible for a 30 percent tax credit on up to $1,500 in costs. But, that credit only applies to certain items like doors, windows and water heaters.
So the next time you're out shopping for a new washer or dryer, remember to reach for the star - Energy Star that is.
