The U.S. Postal Service has proposed changing its rules to ban cockfighting advertising from being sent through the mail.

The Humane Society of the United States on Wednesday took note of a Postal Service proposal to change its rules to turn away publications with ads for fighting birds or accessories, such as blades attached to the birds' feet. The Humane Society sued the Postal Service to force the change. Two cockfighting magazines are still in business. Grit & Steel and The Gamecock, the latter based at Hartford, Ark. Another, The Feathered Warrior, published in Hartford, sent its final issue in July.

The Humane Society says its next objective is to make cockfighting a felony in the 11 states where it is a misdemeanor.
