LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A federal judge will allow lawyers for the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries to seek certain documents from child-welfare officials in a lawsuit against the state.

An order Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Harry F. Barnes granted lawyers an opportunity to refute a request by state lawyers to dismiss the suit.

The lawsuit accuses state officials of persecuting the evangelist's followers. It seeks to bar the state from seizing other children associated with the ministry. It also asks a judge to stop the state from forcing parents to leave the church in order to regain custody of their children.

Alamo, 74, faces a July 13 federal trial on charges he took young girls across state lines for sex.
