Sticker Causes Memphis Airport Scare

Police searched a man and took him into custody after a bomb scare at the Memphis airport. Officials say an airport police officer found a bike chained outside Terminal C with a sticker on it indicating it was a pipe bomb.

"We established a perimeter around it and had a fire watch in case there was an explosion," said John Greaud, vice president of airport operations. "We had one of our K9 dogs confirm it was not an explosive."

"This Bike is a Pipe Bomb" is the name of a Florida punk band and stickers bearing their name are relatively common on bicycles.

Once FOX13 told airport officials about the popular decal, they said that it very well could be the same sticker, but when it was found it was taken as a serious threat.

Terminal C and the passenger drop off area were cleared during the false alarm. Some flights were delayed.

"That's scary, that's scary," said Dora Rogers. "I really was afraid because my daughter was supposed to be here at six o'clock."

Rogers was caught in the miles long traffic jam outside the airport. She saw passengers take drastic measures trying to make their flight.

"They were starting to get out of their cars pulling their luggage trying to get to the airport and I was trying to find out what was going on," she said.

If this does turn out to be just a popular sticker taken out of context, this would not be the first time the "This Bike is a Pipe Bomb" sticker caused chaos. In 2006, Ohio University shut down when an officer found a bike unattended with the sticker on it.

Like the Ohio officers, the airport cops don't take any chances.

"Safety of the traveling public is our first concern," said Greaud.
