MEMPHIS, Tenn. - More than 100 Memphis City workers were told Friday their services are no longer required.

The employees were asked to come to the Benjamin Hooks Library on Poplar, and then fired.

Those laid off said they don't know what their next move will be or how they will pay the bills. A good number of those we spoke with had been on their jobs at least ten years.

Many walked out with heads bowed after being fired. Others said they were frustrated at the city's way of terminating them. Many said they were just informed the day before that their jobs would be eliminated.

Don Williams, who was just laid off from City Park Services, said "After 16 years they just tell you that one day and the next say you're gone, seems like right before they got rid of me they hired two part-timers. I don't know how the hell that's saving money."

Williams said the city told him it's possible he could come back or ‘bump’ someone with less seniority.

Those fired say they were also told they could apply to other positions that may open in the future.
