Bargain Thursday: Habitat ReStore

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - It's been a long time coming, but in two weeks the Habitat ReStore will reopen. This is huge news for anyone who has a home or apartment that needs furnishing or a little TLC.

Eleven years ago, the Bargain Thursday 'Buy Team' took you to a smallish store just past a dumpster behind an office on Scott Street. It was a dusty, dirty place chock full of bargains. The Habitat ReStore closed eight years later.

It has taken three years, but soon we will experience a new and bigger ReStore with more furniture, more appliances, more cabinets, and virtually anything you can use to renovate or redecorate a home, including the kitchen sink. Lots of them, in fact, new and old.

At the Habitat ReStore, used goods are 80-90% off. New items are at least half off the retail price. The merchandise is donated by businesses and individuals. For example, Lowe's donated several truckloads of cabinets. An upper cabinet probably cost $90 at a Lowe's or Home Depot, but their price is around $45-$50.

Believe it or not, books are the best sellers. Macy's also donated a whole load of Martha Stewart kitchenware and when this store opens, this stuff will sell like hotcakes.

The Habitat Restore won't open until June 9th. Until then, workers and volunteers are scrambling to get the former Duffin Dollar Store at Winchester and Riverdale ready.

People are still dropping by with donations, from home decor items to box loads of goods. And, they need more. They'll take pretty much anything except clothes, mattresses and used carpet. All donations are tax deductible.

They also need volunteers to organize donations and get this ReStore re-stocked. In the meantime, the renovation of the ReStore is right on track.
