MEMPHIS, Tenn. - It's starting to get cold outside, and Jimmy Wilkerson with Vatterott College joins FOX13 to share tips on reducing your energy consumption.

Seasonal Home Energy Saving Tips

  • If you use a dishwasher, let the dishes air dry with the dishwasher door open. This heat will offset energy used for heating your house.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use approx 25% of energy used by a regular light bulb.
  • Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to about 120 degrees this will save energy and be safer.
  • Take a short shower instead of a bath. Get wet lather up with water off. Rinse off quickly.
  • If you do take a bath leave water in tub until it cools. This heat will offset energy used for heating your house.
  • Dry clothes indoors. The added humidity will help keep your house more comfortable.
  • Install exterior or interior storm windows. Storm windows can reduce heat loss through the windows up to 50%.
  • Change filters/change thermostats
  • With an electric drier you can use a lint trap and vent the heat indoors instead of wasting it outdoors.
